Climate, biodiversity, and the crisis facing international shipping
The global shipping industry has the potential to lead the way to a planet where people and nature thrive, or risk it all. The shipping industry plays an essential role in the global economy and in our everyday life, which comes with great responsibility and impacts. The shipping sector’s CO2 emissions are greater than Germany’s, and they are expected, under a business as usual scenario, to increase 50 per cent by 2050. Over the last six years, the sector’s emissions have increased by 10 per cent. Join World Wildlife Fund Canada’s Elissama Menezes as she discusses what is needed to reduce the climate impacts of shipping.

Elissama (Eli) MenezesAssociate Specialist,Marine Conservation and ShippingElissama is an Associate Specialist in Marine Shipping at the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), who investigates international and national shipping regulations and provide advice on issues including pollution discharges, exhaust gas cleaning systems, and greenhouse gas and black carbon emissions. She is currently developing a framework for the marine and shipping sector to decarbonize and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Canada. She also assists the work on reducing shipping impacts in marine protected areas. Elissama has engaged with government, industry stakeholders, NGOs, and the International Maritime Organization both in-person and remotely. She provides policy and regulatory advice for WWF-Canada to advocate for cleaner and more sustainable shipping practices effectively.
